One of the most popular ways to get from Barcelona to Montserrat is on the train. It is an affordable and speedy option. However, before you make the journey, it is worth doing some research into your ticket options and into how to make the journey.

On arriving at the train station you will be faced with a selection of ticket options (see below for more details). Not only will you need to decide whether you would like to take a rack railway or a cable car from the bottom of Montserrat Mountain to the top. You will then have the choice of a number of combination tickets covering everything from a simple return journey to inclusion of lunch or entrance to the museum with the ticket price. A step by step guide to getting the train to Montserrat

  • Make your way to Plaça España train station in Barcelona (check our Barcelona metro map for how to get there). The train station is in the same building as the metro station. Follow signs for the R5 train.
  • Decide whether you would like to travel up Montserrat Mountain (from the foot of the mountain, where the train will leave you) by Cable Car or by the Rack Railway (study both of these pages to decide on the option that is most suited to you).
  • Depending on whether you are wish to take the rack railway or the cable car up the mountain after the train journey to the foot of Montserrat mountain, you will need to buy different tickets. There are staff there who can help you with buying tickets - if you are in any doubt as to which ticket to buy, ask them for help.
  • The ToT Montserrat ticket

    "ToT Montserrat" literally means "All Montserrat" in Catalan. The reason it is called this is because this ticket covers most of your costs for a trip to Montserrat.

    The ToT Montserrat tickets includes the return train journey to Montserrat from Barcelona and a choice of either the cable car up to Montserrat mountain or the Rack Railway. The ToT Montserrat ticket also gives you free entry into the Montserrat museum (entry price to museum is €8.00 for adult or €6.50 for pensioners) plus a free lunch at the restaurant at Montserrat. The restaurant offers you a buffet lunch so there is a selection of different food that will satisfy your tastes.

    Once you have reached Montserrat Monastery (which is the first leg up the mountain) you have several other funiculars (mountain trains) that will take you up to higher levels of the mountain. They are the Santa Cova funicular and the Sant Joan Funicular. Normally you would have to pay separately to use these funiculars however with the ToT Montserrat ticket all these fares are include and you can use the mountain funiculars as much as you want without additional cost.

    You can purchase the ToT Montserrat ticket from Espana Rail station at the entrance to the R5 rail line.


  • Board the R5 train (the destination is Manresa - this is the final stop on the train to Montserrat).
  • If you are getting the cable car up to Montserrat mountain, stay on the R5 train until you reach a stop called Aeri de Montserrat - this is where you will catch the cable car (do not be fooled when you get to the Olesa de Montserrat stop, which is the stop before the one that you want - this also has a cable car, but not the one to Montserrat Monastery).

  • If you are getting the rack railway to Montserrat Monastery, make sure that you do not get off at Aeri de Montserrat. Stay on the train until you reach Monistrol de Montserrat. Whilst you are on the train this may confuse you - the stop display in each carriage calls the stop 'Monistrol de M'. Don't worry, this is the stop for Montserrat.
  • Once you have arrived at either the cable car or the rack railway stop, you simply need to get on your chosen form of transport which will take you all the way to Montserrat Monastery.

    Tip It is important that you keep an eye on the timetables for the rack railway, cable car and train back to Barcelona (all times can be found at the page links above). Depending on the time of year the running times will vary. You do not want to find yourself stranded at the top of Montserrat Mountain at the end of the day. If this happens, you're only transport option will be a taxi from Montserrat back down to the bottom of the mountain.
